Identifying Heritage Values and Designing Spatial Juxtaposition for Preserving and Continuing Collective Memories: The Case of Yanzhou Old City

As a big country with a long history, China has many ancient towns with thousands of years of history, which have played an important and unique role, from economic to cultural. Nowadays, with the change of morphology, decline of water transport, adjustment of administrative centres, shift of industry and other factors, many ancient cities have declined and gradually eliminated in the modernisation process. They are seeking a turning point to develop cultural tourism relying on the retained historical and cultural heritage and stories. In this context, ancient city museums might become indispensable anchor points for identifying and preserving collective memories, emphasising cultural identity, passing on culture, attracting tourists, and enriching locals’ lives. This project takes Yanzhou Old City as a case study to discuss the spatial narrative strategy for Yanzhou museum and its surrounding urban space to present the continuity of time, tell city stories and integrate collective memories into new experiences as part of Yanzhou’s revitalisation strategy. Specifically, various spatial juxtaposition possibilities between old and new are explored around the site.
